War and the Humanities: A Reading Group In-Person
This group meets twice a month to discuss books about war from humanities sources: fiction, poetry, memoir, and more. For February, we will be reading The Iliad by Homer. Known by all (and read by few), this classic epic poem is the source of the famous story of the Trojan War. Weaving together themes of honor, rage, Greek mythology, and vengeance, Homer's tale of the wrath of Achilles constantly demonstrates its timeless relevancy. We will be using Samuel Butler's translation, which reduces the difficulty of reading The Iliad by rendering it into prose, thus resulting in this foundational text reading like a traditional novel. If you know you should have read it, but never did, this might be the time! After registering, stop in at the Edinboro Branch to pick up your copy.
