Invasive Species in the Great Lakes

Invasive Species in the Great Lakes In-Person

Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity worldwide. Invasive aquatic plants such as hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) threaten Great Lakes ecosystems by displacing and outcompeting native plants for resources like space, sunlight, and nutrients. Hydrilla is known as nature’s perfect weed because it can grow up to one inch per day under the right circumstances. Many invasive plants like hydrilla reproduce through fragmentation and grow rapidly when introduced to a new location. Join this session to learn about AIS in the Great Lakes with a special focus on invasive aquatic plants and animals, such as hydrilla and many more. This session will help participants build skills to prevent the further spread of highly invasive AIS. By working together to prevent the spread of AIS, we can support the future of Lake Erie waters for all.
