HistERIE: Tour the Federal House at Penn State Behrend In-Person
Get behind the scenes access to the Federal House, one of the oldest homes in Harborcreek! Now located on the campus of Penn State Behrend, this 1838 brick structure began as a home to the Bonnell family, functioned as a safe house on the Underground Railroad, and now houses the Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Community Outreach, Research, and Evaluation (CORE).
This program will include pop-up exhibits about the history of the house and folks who lived there. Do not miss this event offering rare public access to the Federal House!
Program Location: Penn State Behrend, Federal House, 5343 Station Road, Erie, PA 16563
Penn State Behrend was founded in 1948 after when widow Mary Behrend donated her estate to start a college in honor of her husband, Ernst who came to the US to start Hammermill Paper Company. Her original 400 acres have grown as properties were added. The Federal House was donated by Floyd Smith and sat in disrepair for many years until a donor stepped forward with the money for its renovation.
