MADE FREE: PENNSYLVANIA’S LIBRARY JOURNEY Online
In “Made Free and Thrown Open to the Public: Pennsylvania's Centuries-Long Journey Toward Free Public Libraries”, Penn State Harrisburg Librarian Bernadette Lear will shed light on Pennsylvania's long progression from private, subscription-based associations in the 1700s to the publicly-funded, multi-faceted institutions of today. Ms. Lear will especially highlight the dramatic period during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when libraries were “thrown open” to women, children, and the poor.
