The Pursuit of Happiness -- NEA Big Read

The Pursuit of Happiness -- NEA Big Read In-Person

The Declaration of Independence identified "Life", "Liberty", and the "Pursuit of Happiness" as inalienable rights. Yet America's distinct and devastating policy of Indian removal denied such a pursuit to its indigenous peoples. Dr. Benjamin Scharff from Mercyhurst University will discuss the Indian removals that predate, but culminate in the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This program is part of the NEA Big Read Erie and the reading of Joy Harjo's An American Sunrise. Get your free copy of the book at any branch location while supplies last.

The NEA Big Read is brought to you by the National Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with Arts Midwest.
